The Beginning of the End

By early July 1943 the Ostheer had been strengthened to more than 3.5 million personnel with 194 combat divisions of which only fourteen divisions were non-German. Although twelve of the German divisions were the somewhat unreliable Luftwaffe field divisions, sixteen were panzer divisions, six were panzer grenadier divisions and five were SS panzer grenadier divisions. Additionally the Ostheer contained more than thirty independent self-propelled gun battalions, an independent ‘tank destroyer’ regiment and two independent panzer brigades equipped with the latest tanks and self-propelled guns. Also facing the Red Army were nearly half a million Finnish and German troops in Karelia and the Arctic.
